Winter @ The Farm Cradle Country Tasmania

Its official !! We’ve received our first snow of the season!

Living above 540m elevation makes for an interesting winter! We may not get snow as often as Cradle Mountain, however living in the depths of Cradle Country Tasmania and snugged in between the towering mountain terrain of Mt Roland, Mt Claude, Mt Van Dyke & Black Bluff all ensure we get fresh blasts of cool air throughout late July and August.

Snow is the most magical of winters gifts. There is a certain cold behind the usual cold that comes with snow and a silence that is refreshing in todays busy world.

The animals have a love hate relationship with the snow, The goats find it fun to catch snowflakes in their mouths like the true kids that they are and the cows, well they seem to get a little grumpy until the tractor load of hay heads their way and then it appears that all is forgiven.

As for the chickens, its the first time that some of our hens have seen the snow having only joined our family late last year. The other half are well and truly used to the excited squeals as “ The Farmers” start running around the paddocks hurling white balls of snow at one another while hitting a temporary pause on the usual shoveling clean their hen house or feeding out delicious grain treats.
