With some of the cleanest air in the world and a beautiful cool climate, it’s no surprise that Tasmanian truffle farms produce some of the most delicious truffles on offer.
Whether you're a seasoned chef, dabble in creative cooking or just love a good truffle hunt, you are in luck as three truffle farms are within a short scenic drive from The Farm Cradle Country.
The Truffle Farm - 844 Mole Creek Road Deloraine, TAS 7304
Experience the first producing truffle farm in the country. Learn about the history of truffles from the pioneering family, and hear the story of how they were first grown here in Australia. Join second generation truffle farmer Anna, and her truffle hunting dogs and dig up some magic of your own.
Tours run from December to September (10 months) annually.
Several tours are on offer at the time of writing and include Summer Siesta Truffle Hunting, Truffle Hunting, Truffle Hunting & Lunch, Winter warmer hunt. Prices range between $125PP - $195pp.
If you’d prefer to just check out their farm gate shop and buy some truffle goodness it is open daily 10am - 4pm.
The Truffledore - 15 Reeves Rd, Lower Barrington, Tasmania 7306
Located in the sleepy hamlet of Lower Barrington in the foothills of Cradle Mountain, which boasts some of the cleanest air in the world. With Tasmania’s rich volcanic soil and a climate that resembles the South of France, it’s no wonder the region is perfect for growing wonderful fragrant Périgord French Black Winter Truffles.
The boutique truffière was planted in 2007 and contains 600 English Oak, Hollyoak and Hazelnut trees. The black winter truffle grows on their root system, in a symbiotic relationship with the trees.
The farm is run as organically as possible and they avoid using chemicals such as pesticides, relying instead on natural forms of pest control like their flock of 15 guinea fowl. Harvesting their truffles is done completely by hand, finding them with the aid of their truffle dogs.
They have a truffledore tasting room and farm gate shop. Opening times are seasonal so be sure to check their website for updated hours.
They offer a range of experiences at the time of writing which include, A day in the life of a truffle hunter or Truffle hunt and harvest lunch. Other experiences are added seasonally.
Truffles of Tasmania - 110 Trickett Road, Needles, Tasmania 7304
Their Tasmanian truffles are grown among the Great Western Tiers, in the cleanest air in the world. This cool climate environment with some winter snowfall is ideal for the production of the highest quality black truffles. Tasmanian truffles are preferred by chefs across the globe as the cool growing conditions and long summer season produce a stronger and sweeter perfume. All truffles from Truffles of Tasmania are produced on their 50 hectare plantation outside Deloraine, Northern Tasmania.
First established in 2001, Truffles of Tasmania is Tasmania’s largest mature Truffle Farms producing high quality black truffles (Tuber Melanosporum). Their 50 hectare plantation contains English Oak Trees (Quercus Robur, deciduous) and Holm Oak Trees (Quercus Ilex, evergreen).
At the time of writing they offer truffle hunting packages from $120pp. They also have a farm gate shop and online store.
